Carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) testing uses ultrasound to measure the intima and media layers of the carotid arterial wall. The examination does not use ionizing radiation. Carotid plaque assessment documents visible plaque in the segments examined; wall thickness and plaque are related but distinct findings.

Your physician interprets the findings alongside your history, blood pressure, cholesterol, and other risk information. CIMT is not a routine screening recommendation for every adult. A screening result cannot rule out coronary artery disease or predict whether or when a heart attack or stroke will occur.
